The project
A D&D game master juggles character sheets, a bestiary, scenario notes and maps. DiceMind is a personal project born from that: bringing preparation, and eventually running the game itself, into a single desktop application, in French.
The project is still in development: here is where it stands.
What already works
- party and character management, ability scores included;
- a searchable, filterable bestiary of 315 creatures;
- an encounter builder that rates combat difficulty (easy, medium, hard, deadly) using the official Dungeon Master's Guide rules: XP thresholds per level, challenge rating and a multiplier based on the number of monsters;
- adventures split into nested scenes (region, location, room), with background image, grid and token positions.
Under the hood
A cross-platform Electron app (macOS, Windows, Linux) built with Vue 3 and Tailwind. The interface talks to the main process through an IPC API structured like a classic backend, with controllers, services and Mongoose models. Before a single line of code was written, every module got a detailed specification: data models, screens and tasks.
Next steps
- a 'live session' mode: synchronised game master and player screens;
- fog of war revealed live on the map;
- automatic initiative, plus hit point and turn tracking.
